For most people the weather is a matter of convenience. For a farmer it is the single largest uncontrollable variable in the entire operation, and reading it well is a genuine professional skill. The difference between spraying at the right moment and the wrong one, between planting into a warming seedbed and a cold wet one, or between getting hay under cover and watching it spoil in the field, can amount to a substantial share of a season's income. This guide walks through the three weather-dependent decisions that matter most on a working farm, and the conditions the professionals actually watch.

Consider spraying first, because it is the decision where weather is most tightly regulated and most easily got wrong. When you apply a pesticide, herbicide or fungicide, the goal is for the product to land on the target and stay there. Two weather factors work against you: wind, which carries fine droplets away as drift, and a phenomenon called a temperature inversion, which can trap those droplets and move them unpredictably long after you have finished.

Wind is the obvious one, but the intuition most people have is backwards. A dead calm morning feels like the ideal time to spray, and it is often the worst. The reason is the inversion. On a clear, still night the ground radiates heat away and cools, and the air just above it cools too, so that a layer of cold air sits trapped beneath warmer air higher up. This is a temperature inversion, and it is extremely stable — it does not mix. Spray released into an inversion does not disperse and settle; the fine droplets hang suspended in that cold layer and can drift sideways for long distances, damaging neighbouring crops or sensitive areas hours later. The telltale signs of an inversion are exactly the conditions that feel most inviting: little or no wind, clear skies overnight, and often dew or ground fog at dawn.

The professional sweet spot for spraying is therefore a light, steady breeze rather than dead calm — roughly five to sixteen kilometres per hour, or about three to ten miles per hour. That is enough air movement to guarantee the atmosphere is mixing and no inversion is present, but gentle enough that drift stays minimal. Above roughly fifteen miles per hour, drift becomes unacceptable and the labels on many products legally prohibit application. Below about three miles per hour, you are in inversion-risk territory and should hold off. Alongside wind, you want to check that no rain is forecast for long enough after application for the product to become rainfast, and that temperature and humidity are moderate — very hot, dry conditions cause fine droplets to evaporate before they even reach the plant.

Planting is a slower decision but no less weather-driven, and the key variable is one most people never think about: soil temperature, not air temperature. Seeds germinate in response to the warmth of the ground they sit in, and every crop has a threshold below which germination is slow, uneven or fails entirely. Maize, for instance, wants a soil temperature comfortably into the low teens Celsius and rising; drilling into cold, wet soil below that invites the seed to sit there vulnerable to rot and pests instead of springing up. Experienced growers watch the trend as much as the number — a seedbed that is at the threshold and warming under a run of mild days is very different from one at the same temperature but about to be hit by a cold, wet spell. Air temperature and the forecast matter here mainly as a guide to where the soil is heading. A late frost after emergence can undo the whole gamble, so the risk of frost in the days after planting is watched as closely as the warmth before it.

Harvest, and haymaking in particular, is the decision where the multi-day forecast earns its keep. Cut grass needs to dry in the field before it can be baled, and that typically means several consecutive dry days with enough sun and air movement to pull the moisture out. Bale hay that is still too damp and it can heat in storage through microbial action, spoiling the crop and, in the worst cases, generating enough heat to start a barn fire. So the haymaking decision is really a bet on a dry window: the forecaster is looking for a stretch of settled weather long enough to cut, ted, turn and bale, with no rain to undo the drying. This is exactly the situation where the ensemble thinking matters — a forecast showing a confident, agreed-upon dry spell is worth acting on, while one where the models disagree about when rain arrives calls for caution. Grain harvest has its own version of the same problem, where standing crop needs to reach a low enough moisture content and rain can both delay cutting and knock ripe grain to the ground.

Underlying all three decisions is a broader point about scale. National forecasts are made for regions; a farm makes decisions for individual fields, and fields have their own microclimates. A low-lying field frosts before a sloping one. A field sheltered by a treeline dries more slowly than an exposed one. A south-facing slope warms its soil weeks ahead of a north-facing one nearby. The best growers combine the official forecast with decades of accumulated local knowledge about how their particular ground behaves, effectively downscaling the regional picture to the field level in their heads. On-farm weather stations have made this far more precise, letting growers track soil temperature, humidity and rainfall at their own location rather than relying on a reading from an airport thirty kilometres away.

The thread running through all of this is that agricultural weather is not about whether it will be a nice day. It is about specific thresholds tied to specific decisions, watched over specific windows of time. A farmer does not ask "what is the weather like." They ask whether the wind is in the safe band for spraying this morning, whether the soil has reached drilling temperature and is holding, and whether there is a long enough dry spell coming to get the hay in. Framed that way, the forecast stops being background noise and becomes one of the most valuable tools on the farm.
